IHSFC Clinical Research

Clinical Research Component

Our facility:  We have a newly renovated clinical research space in Weniger Hall, Room 333, dedicated to serving the translational research needs of EHSC investigators. There we can:

  • Meet with study participants.
  • Do physical assessments including vital signs, weight, height, pulmonary function tests.
  • Obtain and process biological samples (blood and urine).

Our clinical research staff offers expert advice and assistance in planning, designing and conducting translational studies:

  • Developing protocols: study design, analysis plan, confidentiality and privacy, instrument development, inclusion and exclusion criteria;
  • Preparing Institutional Review Board materials and managing ongoing Human Subjects Committee matters;
  • Recruitment, screening and retention of study participants; administration of informed consent; randomization and blinding; conducting follow-up;
  • Specimen collection, transport, and storage;
  • Ensuring security of sensitive data and providing for data and safety monitoring.
  • Coordinating access to on-campus resources including body composition, nutritional assessments, or questionnaire development.
  • Facilitating access to well-characterized study populations through the Center for Healthy Aging Research’s Life Registry and through Oregon Health & Science University’s Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute.

On-site clinical research services include:

  • Sample collection and basic processing;
  • Coordinating laboratory assessments and pathology services;
  • Evaluating study volunteers to determine eligibility for clinical research projects;
  • Conducting physical assessments of human study participants including basic vital signs, focused physical examinations, and physiological measurements such as spirometry;
  • Review of and response to adverse events.

Future Plans: We are developing a centralized biological specimen storage system for long-term storage and tracking of human biospecimens.
